Oldest Manufactured Wine in the World

  • Commandaria, Cyprus’ legendary sweet wine, is officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest manufactured wine, with origins dating back to 2000 BC.

    Its name comes from the medieval Grande Commanderie, established during the Crusades when the Knights of St. John built Kolossi Castle in 1210.

    In 1223, King Philip of France praised it as “The Apostle of Wines,” cementing its reputation across Europe as one of the most historic wines ever produced.

Centuries of Glory

  • Origins in Antiquity

    The earliest documented reference to a wine resembling Commandaria comes from Hesiod around 700 BC, who described carefully sun-drying harvested grapes before pressing them — a method still central to traditional Commandaria production today.

  • A Wine of Kings

    When Richard the Lionheart conquered Cyprus in 1191, he tasted the local sweet wine and admired it so much that he served it at his wedding in Limassol, calling it “the wine of kings and the king of wines.” His praise helped spread Commandaria’s fame across medieval Europe.

  • A Medieval Triumph

    In 1224, King Philip Augustus of France organized what is considered the first wine competition in history — the“Battle of the Wines”in Paris — where Commandaria was celebrated as“the king of wines,”gaining remarkable fame across medieval Europe and beyond.
